Auto Glass: my window fell, auto glass shops, 2006 toyota camry

Question
I've got a 2006 Toyota Camry. Last week the driver side window stopped working but I could hear the motor going. Whenever the door was closed or I drove over a bump, there was a rattle coming from inside the door. Today, the window slid down and is now sitting at an angle with part of it showing. Is this now a major fix?

Answer
Hi Maggie,

I am not sure.  I haven't done much work on Camry's this new.  The typical Camry with a window problem is either a 1992 to 1996 or a 1997 to 2001.

I hesitate to say what might be wrong because I am not 100 % sure what style of "window regulator" (the mechanism that moves the window) they are using in the 2006 Camry.  However, I think it is likely that one of the two bolts that hold the glass to the "window regulator" fell out.  The other possibility is that one of the two plastic mounting brackets that are glued to the bottom of the glass has broken.

In either case, the repair is fairly simple.  If you have a good relationship with an independent mechanic, he should be able to handle the repair for a reasonable price.  If you don't already know a good mechanic, you could try calling a few auto glass shops in your area to see it they would be interested.  Don't be surprised if they want $50 to take off the door panel in order to see what's wrong.  Let them know that is okay, but make them tell you up front what they will charge if the problem is just a missing bolt or a broken glass bracket.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
