Auto Glass: 1995, 4-runner, rubber gaskets, window regulators

Question
My glass on tailgate came off the track on one side.Is there anyway to get the glass to go up with the tailgate open.It will only go up with the tailgate up. Also what can I use to keep from popping again. THANKS,

Answer
Hello Kemt,

I have repaired several 1990-1995 Forerunner tailgate window regulators over the last ten years. When you remove the access/inspection cover on the tailgate, I am very confident that you will discover that the glass "lift channels" (two) have rusted away from the bottom edge of the glass.

Toyota sells the channels and the associated rubber gaskets for about $60.  However, this is not a job for someone without the right tools and a good deal of experience.  You can expect a repair cost in the neighborhood of $175 to $200 from a reputable glass shop that does this type of repair.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
