Auto Glass: window assembly, 2003 yukon xl, light reflector

Question
I have a 2003 yukon xl with a driver side power window problem. As far as I can tell, the glass is no longer attached to the lift/lower mechanism. The window is up and when I press the down switch I can hear the motor and the arm travel to the bottom and stop but the window does not move. when I press up, I hear it raising back up to the glass. How is the glass attached to the lift/lower arm?? I want to take the door panel off and have a look - can you give me some tips on how to remove the panel? (Where the screws are?)
Thanks - Ken

Answer
Hi Ken,

It would be very unusual for the glass to just come loose from the regulator.  I suspect that your regulator is broken.  However, anything is possible, so below are a list of steps for removing the door panel.

1.  Remove the triangular shaped trim piece covering the bolts that hold the mirror to the door.  Use a flat bladed tool like a stiff putty knife to carefully pry it loose starting at the top edge.

2.  Remove the door handle bezel from around the handle by prying it out of the opening in the door panel starting at the back of the bezel.

3.  Remove the courtesy light/reflector by prying it out of the opening in the door panel starting at the top and back of the reflector.  Remove the wires from the front of the courtesy light after the reflector/courtesy light has been removed from the opening.

4.  Remove the door lock indicator slide by using a small, flat screw driver to pry it out of the door panel opening starting at the back edge.

5.  The switch bezel may or may not be removable.  If it is removable, you will be able to carefully pry up the bottom edge to reveal two small brass colored metal "clips" that fit into two small openings in the door panel.  If you can see these metal clips then it is safe to pry the bezel off the door panel and remove the electrical wires from the switch.  If you can't see these metals clips, leave the switch bezel in place on the door panel and remove the wires from the switch once the panel is loose. (see step 7.)

6.  Remove the two or three 7mm hex head screws located behind the lock indicator slide, under the door handle pull, and under the switch bezel if it is removable, and at the bottom edge of the door panel.

7.  Lift the door panel straight up about three or four inches to release the door panel "claws" from their slots in the door.  Tilt the panel a few inches away from the top of the door and remove the speaker wire, the seat control wire (optional), and the wires to the window switch if the switch was not removed in step 5.  Now you should be able to completely remove the door panel and set it aside.

If you would like to get an idea of what the Yukon window regulator looks like, go to  http://www.dormanproducts.com  and enter part number 741-644 and click on the resulting picture to enlarge the image.

Let me know how else I can help.
