Auto Glass: Ford Window wont go up, ford explorer sport trac, ford explorer sport

Question
Model: 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

Last night while out driving, I put the driver's side front window all the way down. When I got home and went to put the window up, nothing. All other windows, including the rear window are working.

Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Brian,

The most common problem I see is the window motor.  You might be able to get the window up doing the following.

1.  Start the engine with the vehicle in "park."

2.  Open the driver door.

3.  With your right hand reach over to depress and hold the window switch "up."

4.  With your left hand shut the door firmly without letting go of the switch with your right
   hand.

This process is designed to "unstick" the motor.  If the motor starts working again, it will lock up again sooner or later, so you should plan on replacing it in the not too distant future.

If the motor doesn't start working again after shutting the door, the motor could have failed beyond the point where "unsticking" it won't work or you may have a switch or wiring problem.

You don't say what your level of mechanical skill/experience is so, if you want to try to trouble-shoot this on your own, just send me a follow up question.

Ben ... the power window guy.
