Auto Glass: Power window clip broken, buick skylark, dorman products

Question
I have a 1990 Buick Skylark with a drivers side power window clip broken.  The problem is they no longer make, stock, or after market these parts.  My question is if there are other clips that will work or if the junk/salvage yard is my only option?

Answer
Hi Karl,

I am not sure which "clip" you need.  There are two basic types: one that is glued to the glass and another that snaps into a pre-drilled hole at the edge of the glass.

If you need one that is glued on, I think you are better off getting a new or used piece of glass with the "clip" already in place.

If you need one that snaps into the pre-drilled hole, then you should be able to find one from an "aftermarket" part source.  I suggest you visit your closest auto parts store and ask them to look at what is available from Dorman Products under the category of "Window Guides."  Dorman has several common guides available such as part number 45285, 45287, 45294, 45295, etc.

The key to selecting a new guide to replace your broken one is knowing whether or not your broken guide has one or two edges that snap into the channel that holds the glass in place.  Be sure to bring your broken guide to the parts store when you go searching.

If I haven't made this clear enough, feel free to send a follow up question for more information.

Good Luck,

Ben .... the power window guy.
