Auto Glass: 1997 Toyota Camry windows, toyota camry, slim possibility

Question
My 97 4 cyl Camry has 220,000 miles.  The front power windows roll down okay, but are sluggish rolling up.  Won't roll up at all for awhile then an inch or so at a time.  The back windows are the same, but sometimes the wrong switch controls the back windows.  We've replaced the switch in the driver's door twice, once to see if that was the problem and once after the second switch broke. What's our next step?

Answer
Hi Kathy,

You one have situation that's easy to explain and one that I have never encountered.

Let's start with the "sluggish" going up problem.  Your window motors are failing.  The window stops because an internal motor overload trips.  After the overload resets, the window will move a bit more.  You have no option but to replace the window motor(s).

Now the "wrong switch" problem is one I have never heard of before.  One scenario that explains that situation is if some one rearranged or improperly spliced the wires in the wiring harness that connects to your master window switch.   The other very slim possibility is that the incorrect window switch was installed.  Sorry I can't be of more help on that one.

Good Luck, Ben ... the power window guy.
