Auto Glass: Power switch-master and passenger, metal spring clip, straight blade screwdriver

Question
QUESTION: 2000 pontiac grand prix gtp. My rear passenger window switch at my master control and passenger switch do not work. is there a simple solution? Please help!

ANSWER: Hello Aki,

I need to know more about your situation before I can give you any suggestions.  Please answer these questions.

Is the window up or down?

Does the window glass slide down all by itself?

If the glass slides down by itself, can you pull it back up at least part way?

Can you hear any motor noise from inside the door when you press the button on the master switch or the individual driver switch?

QUESTION: window is up

can't slide it since it's up

no motor noise either switch

Answer
Okay Aki,

I can't tell you exactly what is wrong, but I can narrow it down to a few possibilities.

1.  The motor may have failed.  A replacement GM motor is quite expensive.  There is a new aftermarket motor available (don't use a re-manufactured motor) at a reasonable price.  Unless you have some significant mechanical skills, tools, etc. I wouldn't attempt replacing the motor yourself.

2.  The single switch on the rear door may have failed.  There is a simple way to check this out.  The switch is held in place by a metal spring clip at the bottom of the switch. Remove the switch from the door panel by placing a small, straight blade screwdriver under the back edge of the switch cover.  Push the screw driver forward a bit to depress the spring clip and lift up.  Then remove the wiring from the switch, bring the questionable switch to the other side of the car where the window is working properly.  Take out that good single switch.  Now plug your questionable switch into the wiring connector on that side.  If the window works you know your questionable switch is good and not the source of your problem.

3.  You may have a bad master window switch.  It is not possible to trouble shoot this situation without a wiring diagram and an electrical meter or 12 volt test light so there is no use telling you much more about it than to recommend that you go to a mechanic who is familiar with electrical repairs.

4.  You may have a broken wire between the master window switch and the body of the car.  Again, this is not a situation in which the average person has the tools or know how to handle.

I hope this information is helpful.  Please send a follow up question if you need anything else.
