Auto Glass: Rear Stationary glass replacement 00 Nissan Xterra, Urethane primer

Question
QUESTION: I was lucky enough to have my back two windows shot out by clueless hunters. I have a 2000 Nissan xterra V6 4x4. I need to know how the large rear stationary quarter window is installed. A mechanic friend of mine and I can get the rear motorized window done ok but the large window in the far back is the one we are not sure of. I have a replacement via salvage so I would prefer to do it ourselves if at all possible. We haven't taken out the fractured glass yet. Do you have any instructions or advice you could offer to us? Thanks so much!! Emily

ANSWER: Hi Emily

The quarter glass should have clips on it to make the glass snap fit perfectly into the pinchweld much like a door panel has.

If it does have the clips, just gut all urethane off and prime, shoot and snap it to let dry.

If no clips on glass, use tape to hold into place until dry for 2 days

QUESTION: Thank you very much. Can you tell me what we should prime with or what to ask for as far as adhesive when I go to purchase it? Is there a certain technique we should be aware of when applying the primer/adhesive? Again, Thanks a lot! Emily

Answer
Hi Emily

3M is your best bet with both Primer and Urethane. Both are very expensive at about 15-20.00 and 18-25 respectively. If you call around to some glass shops you might find them to be surprisingly affordable when it comes to install only pricing, some as low as 35.00-45.00 for your glass job. As far as technique its all about the bonding, the cleaner the glass and body the stronger the bond and the primer being applied to both pinchweld and glass takes care of the rest. Read all instructions on tubes and primer and you should have no problems.
