Auto Glass: auto window on passenger side off track, autozone, market regulator

Question
i have a 1995.5 rodeo and the window on the front passenger side is off the track. How do i put it back on the track and hope that it won't happen again?

Answer
Hi Ashlee,

I doubt that your passenger window is "off track."  It is much more likely that the window regulator is broken.  Allow me to explain.

The mechanism inside the door that moves the window up and down is called a "regulator."  In the case of a 1995 Rodeo, it is a "cable style regulator."  Two cables (like a bicycle brake cable only thinner) connect to a spool or reel that is turned by the window motor.  One cable is wound clock-wise the other cable is wound counter clock-wise around the spool.  The opposite end of each cable is connected to a "lifting plate" that is bolted to the bottom of the door glass.  So when the motor turns "up" the top cable pulls the window up.  When the motors turns "down" the bottom cable pulls the window down.

The most common failure associated with this type of mechanism is called "cable pull through."  The end of the "up" cable pulls out of its anchor on the lifting plate.  So when the motor turns the spool the "up" cable is no longer connected to the lifting plate and cannot pull your window up.  That is why your window went down okay, but will not go back up.

The cable regulator in your Rodeo is not repairable.  It must be replaced.  This is not a job for a novice.  So use a mechanic or glass company that has made this repair before.  The part is available from Isuzu.  You can even go to Honda and get the regulator for a 1995 Passport.  It is made by Isuzu for Honda.  You might save a few dollars by going to your local Autozone, Carquest, NAPA, etc. parts store to get an "after market" regulator.

Let me know if you have any questions.
