QUESTION: 1998 Ford Explorer, Virginia Beach, VA

Answer
Hi Ray,
Your probably asking yourself why I needed to know where you live? Its simple!, in a word, RUST! Metal rusts quicker the closer you live to Salt water. Virginia Beach, VA would qualify as one of these areas. By knowing the Make and Model I can tell if there have been leaking problems with this model Car or Truck in the past. This year and model does not have any leaking problems that I know about. You said "It appears that the rubber molding has deteriorated" Tells me the Windshield was replaced or has suffered damage in that area of the glass or body. The First sign of a rusted pinchweld is Bubbled paint. Rust forms and pushes the paint away as the rust expands. A leaking windshield left alone over time can cause Major damage to the cars Interior, Body, paint, Wiring and Computer. Not to mention the Old Moldy musty smell that is Very hard to remove. If your windshield is old and pitted from all the stones on the road it would be Wise to invest the 150-200 Price to Replace it! When the man comes to replace it watch him and make sure he addresses the rust issue by grinding it away and primes the glass and the car! ANY Rust around glass could mean the entire seal is compromised and this would constitute a safety issue. If you want to spend the time and the money along with the aggravation factor you can TRY to fix it yourself, BUT Remember you could spend up to 60-80 bucks doing everything right and still end up having to wear Scuba gear to drive to work LOL :)  I do Not Recommended you try but the supplies you would need are: The all important urethane primer 10-15.00, Tube of Urethane 3M 15-20.00, NO SILICONE!!! Rubber gloves for the messy glue 9.00, Chemical mask for toxic fumes (from primer) 10-30.00.   Repair: Clean area, prime, apply urethane. clean again. Leak test after 6 hrs or so. Hope this helps. Derek :)
