Auto Glass: Replacement of automatic dim side view mirror, chevy tahoe, mirror question

Question
QUESTION: I'm experiencing double vision on the exterior side view mirror on the driver's side and have called the dealer on pricing and was told $500-$600 to replace.  I've found parts less than $100 online and was wondering how difficult it would be to replace on my own?

ANSWER: Hi Christina,

Side view mirrors are generally not too difficult to replace, but I will need to know the make, model, year, and the door of the vehicle in question before I can give you a complete answer.

QUESTION: My vehicle make is 2002 Chevy Tahoe and would like to replace the driver's exterior side view mirror because I'm experiencing double vision on the mirror itself.  The dealer quoted me $500-$600 to replace but the part online appears to be <$100.  How difficult would it be to replace on my own?

Answer
Hi Again Cristina,

Replacing the mirror is relatively simple.  You remove three nuts, disconnect the mirror wiring from the wiring harness and remove the mirror.  Installing the new one is as simple as connecting the wiring from the mirror and installing the three nuts to secure the new mirror.

However, you do have to remove the door panel in order to get to where the wiring connector from the mirror plugs into the wiring harness.  Removing the door panel is a little too complicated to describe in this e-mail, but it is not impossible for a novice to do if you have some mechanical skill and a few tools like socket sets and screw drivers.

One thing you might consider, buy the mirror on-line and let your local glass shop remove the door panel and install the mirror.  If you bring the vehicle to them they can probably do it for around $50.
