Auto Glass: Water spots on Glass, car detailer, toyota avalon

Question
Hi Kevin, I own a 2001 Toyota Avalon. We have owned this car for about 3 yrs. My wife has been complaining about the water spots on the outside of the glass. We live in Southern Louisiana. We use water from an underground source via pump to wash. I have tried vinegar and a KaBoom which is a mild bathroom cleaner. The KaBoom has helped a a little. What else can I try short of replacing the glass or my wife? Just kidding about my wife.

Thanks,
John

Answer
Hi John,

Water spots come from minerals in your water supply and they are a pain.  It sounds like you covered the basics.  Kaboom and a vinegar/water mixture is usually the first treatment.  If the spots are relatively fresh, those options will work pretty well.  My next suggestion would be to use some steel wool and Kaboom to clean your windshield.  Use some that is really fine like a 000 grade.  Just be careful not to use a coarser grade or to get dirt in the wool because you can scratch the glass.  If that doesn't work, you can probably find some commercial water spot removers at a local boat dealership.  Otherwise, you will probably have to get a car detailer to buff and polish your windshield.  Once you get the spots out, dry your car after each washing and apply some spray wax to your windshield.  If you get a chance, send me a follow-up and let me know how it works out.

Thanks,
Kevin
