Automotive Plastics: Mazda 626 interior fabric on door panel is loose, door panel

Question
Hi, I have a 2002 Mazda 626, 4 door, with leather interior. Since the first year I had the car the leather-like (imitation leather) fabric on the interior door panels has been loose at the edges.  In the past I could usually just tuck it back in and it would stay that way for a few months at a time. Now that I live in a more humid climate, however, the tucking fix does not work.  The fabric seems to be in tact (i.e., not rotting away). I would like to just glue it back along the edges to prevent it from getting worse.  I heard that "contact cement" is what the pros use.  I also found "Goop Contact Adhesive & Sealant" online and thought that may do the trick, but it is not recommended for use on polystyrene, polyethylene or polypropylene plastics.  I'm not sure what kind of plastic my door panels are made of.  Any suggestions for fixing this?  Thanks!!

Answer
Hi Zon, Using adhesives to join polymer (plastic) surfaces sometimes is hard to deal with. Therefore, we must know what plastics and/or fabrics were used in the panels. Try to find the codes of these in the rear part of any plastic produced after 2001 under the form >XX< XX being letters and numbers corresponding to plastics. We need to know both the panel and the fabric composition to use the best adhesive. Let me know your findings. Remember: silicones, some cleaners and deodorants attack sensible plastics like >PVC< (the most used plastic for artificial leather) the problem is shrinking and the symptoms edge loosening and cracking. Even direct sun light decompose skins.
