Automotive Plastics: Quick Question, polyester type, wetability

Question
Hello,
I just purchase a new tail gate for my truck. I need to paint it to match the color of my white truck. On a brand new item like this do I need to use any type of primer or anything else on it, before or after I paint it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards-Skyler

Answer
Hi Skyler,
I suppose your tail gate is the plastic-reinforced polyester type. You must always use an appropriate primer because if even having a OEM phosphate protective coating 6 primer, they tend to get passive after long storing.
A metal gate? this type is prone to have small dents & bumps produced during handling and shipping. Al least they may be greasy or dusty which is not good.To avoid this just sand with 1000 grit after priming.
Priming is important to diminish surface tension and to ensure good paint "wetability" and so to promote adhesion.
I recommend to always use a primer despite having a previous one. Your paint dealer may help you to select a good one.
After painting you might require a clear top coat but this depends on the type of paint you use. Thanks
