Automotive Plastics: radiator tank, plastic radiator tanks, radiator tank

Question
Hi I recently got into an accident, my radiator was leaking, my car is in the shop but the mechanic just fixed the radiator. He said the radiator was fine and all he had to do was charge me 45 dollars for a new plastic tank, not including labor. Do you think I should of done that or bought a new radiator. And do plastic radiator tanks even last long?

Answer
Dear pooh,
Not all tanks can be repaired successfully, nor they sell them as spare parts.I think changing the tank due to an accident seems to be appropriate.Usually these pieces are damaged as a result of fatigue. Would have this been the case, I certainly would have recommended changing the radiator, which is expected to last from 5 to 8 years.Getting an original tank as you did, makes you a lucky one Bear. How to repair a Polyamide tank and all plastic parts?
