Auto Parts: Effect of vibrations

Question
While driving over speed bumps, I just tend to go slow in 2nd gear and slow down just by stepping on the brakes, and the car sounds like it is going to shut down or shutters a lot. I know it can be avoided if I press the clutch but if I don’t press the clutch, then can these intense vibrations be harmful for the car?

Answer
Hello Ali,

This sounds to me like you are not properly downshifting.  When going over a speed bump, etc., you must use the brakes.  When using the brakes you are slowing the engine and the transmission, therefore you must downshift.  If you do not properly downshift, the cehicle will shutter because of the torque required to get the vehicle back to the speed required for the gear you are in.

Try downshifting to a lower gear and see if that corrects your problem.  I suspect it shall.

Thank you.

Good Luck
