Auto Parts: Body Control Module, 1999 chrysler lhs, chrysler lhs

Question
Hey, Antonio.

I own a wonderful 1999 Chrysler LHS and my windows and tail lights went dead. I am 99.9% certain it is the body control module but the other .1% tells me to just remove it and clean around the 25 pin connector. My question is if indeed I do need to replace the module, where in the world would I get one other than a salvage yard (where I don't want to go) and who besides the dealer would be able to program the VIN?

Thanks buddy and Merry Christmas!

Answer
Hello Marcus,

First I would like to ask you, what makes you think it is the BCM?  Have you exhausted all other possible options?  It is possible it could be a bad fuse or series of fuses, possibly even a bad master fuse.  It is also possible that there is a broken wire somewhere, possibly a bad ground or shorted wire.  There are many alternative reasons as to why your windows and tail lights are not working, that are much less expensive to correct, i would recommend checking into all these options first, before you look to replace the BCM.

Now, in answer to your question, because of the age of your vehicle, a salvage yard will probably be your best bet.  However, it is possible to find a bcm through an auto part store, and even some on ebay now and then, though you need to  be weary of the ebay parts as you dont know the true condition of what they are selling all the time.  Other then that the deaer may have or be able to get you a new one.  To answer your second question, it has been my experience that only the dealer can program the vin for you, this is to prevent people from being able to swap vins on cars.

Please let me know your progress, and let me know if i can be of further assistance.

Good Luck

Thank you
