Auto Parts: EGR valve question..., haynes repair manuals, backyard mechanic

Question
Mike,
I've got a 2001 Buick LeSabre (V-6) with the "Check Engine Light" on.  So I hooked up my code-reader and got a reading for P1404, which I'm told is the EGR valve...though there are three or four different things that could be wrong.
Is replacing an EGR valve something that a so-so backyard mechanic can do, or is there special tools/knowledge I would need to replace it myself?  (I've got one of those Haynes repair manuals for the car, and have been able to fix some things.)  Just wondered how complicated it is to get to the EGR valve.
Any suggestions, advice you could offer is greatly appreciated.
Warm regards,
David

Answer
The valve is located on the intake manifold, and may be one of the easiest things to change on the car.  Just be aware that the code is not a precise solution; it means that the EGR is not functioning properly, but not why.  Still, it's an inexpensive part and I would probably be inclined to change it before looking for a more complex fault.
