Auto Parts: car doors, 2006 bmw 325xi, bmw 325xi

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2006 BMW 325xi and the door locks will not work...not from the remote key nor the interior lock/unlock button. I can get the driver's door open with the integrated key (not the remote button, but the key that's inside it and you put in the actual door lock) and open the driver's side back door from the inside, but the passenger side doors won't open at all...not from any button or manually from the inside. On top of that, I tried to check the fuse, but I just discovered that I do not have the diagram that tells you which fuse is which and can't seem to find it online. Any advice? Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks so much.

ANSWER:      Odds are that what's failed is a relay.  The relays are located in a box in the engine compartment.  There should be a diagram telling you which relay is which on the inside cover of the box or in the owner's manual (likely both).  The fuse guide should be in one of these spots as well.  BMW tends to make the electrics a little more complicated than they need to be (but they're not a patch on some of the Japanese cars), so careful study of which relay does what is a good idea.  If it comes down to really needing a schematic diagram you'll have to get it from the dealer, they don't put that kind of stuff online.

QUESTION: Thank you so much. The only problem is that neither the fuse guide nor a diagram telling where the relays are located are on the inside cover of the glove box or in the owner's manual. I've called the dealer twice and interestingly enough, have not been able to reach someone and they've not returned my calls. Looks like I will have to try again. If I happen to be successful in locating the correct relay, would I be able to get a new one at an auto supply store and replace it myself?

Answer
Another reason why I would never buy a BMW.  I could tell you some real horror stories.  Anyway, you are going to have to go to the dealer in person, I think.  You'll need to do this anyway in order to get them to print you a copy of this information.  I hope there is another BMW dealer in reach of your location, 'cause it sounds like this one isn't very good at their job.  Some BMW models have all of their service info recorded in the computer, requiring a scanner to get at it.  This is done to force you back to the dealer for service, even though it's against the law to do so.  I think you should find a good independent mechanic who is familiar with the brand and start using him.  If you're still under warranty, though, you are stuck with the dealer.
