Auto Parts: 2003 Ford E-350 van AC, orifice tubes, hand grenades

Question
QUESTION: I need to find the capacity of r134a freon needed to fully charge the AC system.
The van has front and rear AC controls.
Thanks,
Jim

ANSWER:      This will only apply if the rear A/C is factory air.  You should call Four Seasons™ tech line (look at www.4s.com) and ask one of them.  Also, anyone with an A/C service machine should have the data available in a manual.  If you are planning on doing this yourself, know that A/C refrigerant capacities are given by weight to the nearest gram and a sensitive scale is needed to do the job properly.  This is after you have used a vacuum pump to clear out the old refrigerant along with any contamination.  My best advice is let a pro do this, he can do the whole job in the time it would take you to get your beer opened.
If it is an add-on rear air it is going to have to be filled using the gauges.  All you will be able to do is get close to the right amount.  Fortunately, A/C refrigerant is like horseshoes or hand grenades---close is almost always good enough.
Since this is a Ford, make sure you replace BOTH orifice tubes.  There is a separate one in the back.  If it is an aftermarket system in the back it may use an expansion valve instead.  Expansion valves usually don't need changing, but getting the system clean will become more important.

QUESTION: So, I read this and I don't see a number. Am I missing something?
This rig is all factory.  I was just trying to find out some info.
Jim

Answer
I don't know why, but these companies are very protective of their technical advice service.  If you go to a store that sells the brand, they will have the number in the printed catalog.  But neither Four Seasons™ nor Murray™(a division of Moog™) seem to want that info in general circulation.  I had both numbers in the rolodex at work, but didn't take them with me when I left.
