Auto Parts: oil leaks, toyota 22r engine, pan gasket

Question
I'm looking o-line for a diagram location for the seals on a toyota 22r engine  thank you Anthony

Answer
What you would need would be an exploded view of the engine.  Toyota, unfortunately and unlike Honda, does not make their parts diagrams available online.  Your best bet would be to go to the local dealer and get them to print you out a diagram from their parts guide.  They will do that for you if you ask nicely.

If it is an older engine you may be able to find a parts book (or a CD-ROM of one) on eBay.  I bought one for my old Jaguars that is full of stuff you can't get anywhere else.  Another option is to find a repair book at the local library and photocopy it.  Most libraries have a lot of this stuff in their reference section.

Another option is to just look at the engine.  These engines have the same seals as other engines, in the same places.  The cam cover and head gasket can leak oil at the top, as well as the little seal at the back end of the camshaft.  The timing cover can leak around its gasket.  The seal in the front of the cam cover where the crankshaft pokes through can leak, as can the seal at the back of the crank (rear main seal).  And the oil pan gasket can leak.  There is no real pressure behind any of these seals except for the head gasket and the gasket at the oil filter.  If the crank seal is leaking the oil will fall directly down below it.  The other sources could run and drip elsewhere.

If you are seeing oil on the alternator, then you have a worn timing cover.  I have seen this several times.  The timing chain wears and, combined with a lazy cam chain tensioner, rubs against the timing cover until it wears a hole in it, then the oil sprays out onto the alternator.  Easy to fix: new chain and tensioner, patch the cover with Marine-Tex or similar product.  This is one you won't find in a book, just from people who have seen it happen.
