Auto Parts: 97 Chevy Blazer rear end..., limited slip differential, chevy blazer

Question
Hello!

I have been doing a lot of searching on the Internet, and maybe the answer is already out there and I am just not looking in the right place, but the rear end blew out of the 97 Blazer we were driving.

The question is, what other rear ends are compatible even if they need some modification? As in changing some parts over and such. As an exact match doesn't seem to be to plentiful here. I've been trying to help my Dad find out information, as it's driving us nuts. We're not sure it's not possible to use another rear end besides one out of a 95-97 Jimmy or Blazer. Thank you again for any help, and your time as well!!

Answer
Why don't you just get the broken one fixed?  If you can find a qualified mechanic (admittedly this is a job that many mechanics lack the skill to do), the parts don't cost a lot and the work isn't that involved.  The only hard part is setting the pinion engagement.  If you are really sold on buying a used one, the wrecking yard has a book that tells them which rear ends they can use.  I would think that an S10 rear would work as well, but they'll know.  The reason fixing the old one is a better idea is that these rears are kind of weak anyway.  Get them to rebuild with premium aftermarket parts and a gear-type limited slip differential; you'll never have to worry about it again.
