Auto Parts: engine light replacemnet, pontiac grand prix, drill bit

Question
The engine light on my 2003 pontiac grand prix doesn't work and I can't pass emmisions without it. Can you tell me if I need to pull out the whole dash to change or can I get to it from under the dash?

Answer
I never heard of a check engine light going out unless someone put it out on purpose.  I knew a used car dealer who used to use a very tiny drill bit to drill through the lens and puncture the bulb.  Of course nowadays they are plugging into the computer to check the engine, and having the light out is meaningless.  I am pretty sure that the whole dash would have to come out to fix this, if the bulb is bad.  It's also possible that the wire between the computer and the light has been damaged; have you ever had the ECM serviced for any reason?  I suppose it's possible that the wire could be damaged or even intentionally unhooked when the plug was out of the ECM.
