Auto Parts: 88 260E oxygen sensors, mercedes interiors, oxygen sensors

Question
QUESTION: where are the oxygen sensors on a 88 260E?
what do I have to take off to find them?

ANSWER:      Oxygen sensors are always located in the exhaust pipe or manifold near where they join.  In some cases they will be located a little further downstream to make access easier.  Start by looking at the manifold, and then follow it down to where it connects with the pipe.  The sensor is a 2-1/2 inch long metal cylinder with a nut at the base just like a spark plug.  A special socket will be needed to remove it, all parts stores carry them.  Make sure to keep the new sensor clean prior to installation, and that there is some (not a lot) of anti-seize compound on the threads.  Without that compound, it won't come out next time.  In this car there should only be one sensor.

QUESTION: Thanks for the quick response, I found the end that goes into the catalytic converter, and the wire goes straight up and where it is rubbing on the drive shaft, then into the frame and I can't see where it goes after that. Do you know if I need to take out the front seat and pull out the floor board to find the other end?

Answer
I certainly wouldn't do that.  Mercedes interiors are a real bitch to take apart and put back together.  The thing to do is to splice the wire, with good tight connection, under the car.  And secure the wire in such a way that it cannot rub on the drive shaft.  It sounds to me like someone has already hacked this system, and not very carefully.  Take a little time and care and the repair should last forever.
