Auto Parts: 2002 Santa Fe Delayed Shift, hyundai santa fe, independent shop

Question
Hello, I have a Hyundai Santa Fe with 2.7L V6. with 120K miles on it. It has started over the last 10-20K miles to get a delay in shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear, causing the engine to wind up similar to as if you have floored the accelerator, and is progressively getting worse. You have to let off the pedal to get it to shift. Problem is alittle worse when cold, but problem there when hot as well. Shifting is not harsh, and shifts well in other gears. Fluid was changed with SPIII at 60K. Using shifttronic, it will shift as soon as you input it to shift, just delays in automatic mode. fluid is up to level, and not dark or burnt. There is not, nor has ever been any check engine codes. Any ideas would greatly be appreciated.

Answer
Hmmm.  The fact that you can ask it to shift manually without any problem sort of eliminates any serious mechanical problems.  I think that you should get a real-time scan of the ECM while the car is being driven.  Something is causing the ECM to delay that shift, pausing in neutral between gears.  There may be a problem with the solenoid that initiates the shift, or with the pressure.  You'll really need to let a pro look at this.  If you can avoid it, please don't use a franchise transmission shop.  Try to find an independent shop with a good reputation, ask around at some regular shops or parts stores about where they would go for transmission work.  Emphasize that you don't want to spend too much, but do want it fixed.
