Auto Parts: dash lights, crown vic, light bulbs

Question
1999 ford crown vict p71. some of the dash lights are bad.what is best way to change them. thanks and have a nice day.

Answer
Like almost all modern cars, the Crown Vic has a printed-circuit dash.  This means that all of the wiring is physically attached to the back of the plastic dashboard, which is then covered by the trim that you see from the front seat.  The light bulbs are inserted in little round holders that are designed to twist into the dash from behind.  It means that you have to lie on your back under the dash, remove any under-dash trim that might be in the way, get a flashlight and look up into that space behind the dash.  You should be able to see almost everything from there.  However, when you stick your hand up in there, it will obscure your view, so you will be working by touch, mostly.  It would be a good idea to buy replacement bulb-holders as well as bulbs, they're very inexpensive.  That way, if you damage one of the very fragile holders, you won't be stuck in the middle of the job.  A good auto parts store should be able to look up and sell you the correct bulbs and holders.  A lot of newer cars use a bulb that is made in one piece with the holder, the catalog at the parts store should tell them which to sell you.  My books show a separate bulb and holder, but experience tells me it could be wrong.
