Auto Parts: differential, holden wb, spring perches

Question
how are ya mike? Just wondering if you could tell me if a ford 9 inch diff would fit into a holden wb ute. If not what would i have to do?

Answer
Well, just the differential wouldn't work, but you could replace the axle assembly with a nine-inch unit.  Of course, I don't know how common used nine-inch Fords are down there, but you could have a new one shipped from the States easy enough.  The beauty of the nine-inch Ford is the design of the axle shafts.  The diameter of the shaft is constant from one end to the other, including the splined portion.   So, cutting the shaft to fit a particular axle-tube length is much easier than with a newer type ford rear or any of GM or Chrysler's units.  All you do is cut the tube to the right length, weld on the correct flange for the bearing retainer and brake backing plate, and then weld on the spring perches, control arm brackets and shock brackets.  The other advantage is the ease with which the gear ratio can be changed.  The entire differential, carrier bearings and all, is self-contained in one unit.  You just pull the axles out of the way, unbolt the differential, bolt in the new one, slide the axles back in, and you're good to go.  That's why it's known as "the poor man's quick-change."  You can run a tall ratio on the highway and switch to something short for bashing around in the boonies.  If you're set up with the right tools the change can be done in about half an hour.  In NASCAR they can do it in about five minutes (or less).  If you want an idea of what can be accomplished with the Ford rear, look at Currie Enterprises' website, they do it all.
