Question
Where is the knock sensor located? Which is the a bank and b bank?

Answer
These cars are different from most other GM cars, but I don't believe that the sensor is.  It should be located on the side of the block, beneath the  exhaust manifold.  "a" bank is the bank with the number one plug, "b" bank is the other one.  Number 1 plug is the one closest to the front of the engine (the passenger side of the car).  I believe it is the front of this particular engine.  They put the sensor on the side of the block so that it is as close as possible to the source of the detonation pulse, if it occurs.  By regulating spark advance according to the knock sensor, manufacturers are able to run as much advance as possible under all conditions and with all types of fuel.  This gives the best possible horsepower and efficiency, enabling the car to get the best possible gas mileage.  It's an important part and should be replaced immediately when it goes bad.  Due to the proximity of the exhaust manifold, it would be best to do the job when the engine is cold.
