Auto Parts: Cylinder head interchangeability., hydraulic roller lifters, chevy 305

Question
Hi,

I have a 1964, 283 cu. in Chevy engine, block #3849852, head casting # 3795896. Can I install Chevy 305, 307 or 350 heads on this block with no modifications? If so is there a certain year range that will fit? Do you know of a web site that has Chevy part interchange information for flywheels, starters, etc? Thanks Mike.

Answer
So far as heads are concerned, they are all interchangeable up until they started using the hydraulic roller lifters in the mid-'80's.  But, if you aren't one hundred per cent sure that they are going to work, you should bolt one on with a few bolts just snugged tight and make sure that the valves don't interfere with the bores.  If you are going to buy aftermarket heads, then you should consult with the manufacturer as to which of their heads they would recommend.  All of the guys in the head business are dedicated to making their customers happy, and will gladly help you.  And the worst aftermarket cylinder head is much better than the best original equipment head, even if it came from a Corvette (ever notice how, when someone is trying to sell you engine parts, they ALWAYS claim that they "came off a 'Vette, man").
