how do i hook up an aftermarket RPM tachomoter on a 97 cavalier

    That's going to depend on whose tach you buy.  Make sure going in that the tach will work with a distributorless ignition.  Most of the big makers have something you can use, or an adapter that will work.  My recommendation is to buy one from Autometer.  They make a wider and more varied range of gauges and instruments than anyone else, and will have something that you can fit into the car and that will work with your ignition system.  You can look at what they have on their excellent website: http://www.autometer.com
