Auto Parts: installing glasspacks, cherry bomb glass packs, pep boys

Question
hello, i wsa reading some of the other questions about this topic and they didnt seem to answer my question. i have a 1983 GMC High Serria half-ton pickup with a 5.7 liter 350 and a automatic transmission and wanted to know how i would install two cherry bomb glass packs on to the exaust system. i read in the other questions that the heads would burn out becasue of the lack of back pressure that newer engines require, but didnt know what the cutoff for the newer engines was.

Answer
Hi Gavin,

Not to worry, '83 isn't considered too new for baffle-mufflers. Besides, your exhaust should be equipped with at least one Catalytic Converter which will create sufficient back-pressure to appease the O2 sensor as well as scavenge the cylinders adequately.

I've never heard that newer heads will be damaged by lack of back-pressure. Older, leaded-fuel heads can be damaged with lack of back-pressure but that was the days before Cat-Converters and the only thing affected by that was the valve guides which lacked 'lead' as a lubricant when the exhaust is able to flow unrestricted out of the cylinder.

If lack of back-pressure affected the engine that greatly, performance drag-strip everyday-drivers would have mufflers on their engines instead of open headers.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
