Auto Parts: manual transmission, dodge neon, pep boys

Question
i have a95 dodge neon, speedo not working, sometimes bounces around, change the speedo sensor and gear still nothing, took out the sensor, put my finger in the hole, in trans ,i can hold the gear,in the trans, the trans is in neutral, sometimes it grabs, and it moves while still trying to hold it. while moving the car, the shop says i need to rebuild my trans, is there any way to fix that gear. without rebuilding the trans, 5 spd manual thank you

Answer
Hi Bruce,

The gear should be held in with a small metal clip that's probably missing or broke. You probably need to remove the tail housing to be able to see what the actual issue is but I doubt you need a reman JUST because the speed sensor clip broke or fell off. Get a second opinion at a reputable transmission shop in your area.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
