Auto Parts: 94 Camaro Project, camaro project, pep boys

Question
Recently purchased a 94 z28 LT1 Auto Transmission.  While in operation, under hard acceleration, fails to up shift.  Seems to shift while under normal acceleration, but shifts late.  A fluid and filter change was necessary as it was overfilled at time of purchase.  Afterwards, car was run while on jackstands and seemed to shift appropriately.  However, once It hit the road, the original problems reoccured.  Does your intuition lead you to believe this is a simpler problem such as a sensor or relay, or perhaps a much larger issue?  If a replacement transmission would be suggested, my intention is to do install the LT1 to a 90 K5, with Turbo 400 transmission.  Any advice on the removal of the harness to ensure a smooth transplant to the K5 from the Camaro, realizing the electrical differences.

Answer
Hi John,

Sounds to me like your detent is not adjusted properly. Check the adjustment and if it is good, send a follow-up an I'll try and help you more.

Proper detent adjustment is as follows: Engine OFF, open throttle to WOT position (Wide Open Throttle), depress 'D' clip on the end of the detent cable and listen or watch for the cable to snap into the proper position. Set like this, the trans should shift slightly late and hard, which is exactly what you'd be looking for in a performance application. If it is too late or too hard of a shift, push the cable end into the 'D' clip ONE-CLICK at a time until you achieve the desired stage. Take the vehicle for a RIDE between adjustments as load is important to shift points as you've already figured out running it on a lift.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
