Auto Parts: 2003 Honda Odyssey Condenser, 2003 honda odyssey, honda odyssey

Question
Hi, the A/C on our '03 Odyssey stopped working.  Dealer says a rock damaged the condenser, and it needs to be replaced...and he wants 800 bucks to do so (including charging the system once the part is replaced).  I'm wondering what changing out the condenser myself entails.  Is it something that a weekend warrior can handle?  Any direction on how to do the repair is appreciated.  Also, my plan would be to install the new condenser and then have a professional evacuate and charge the system.  Is that a good idea?  I'm assuming that it isn't a good idea for an owner to attempt the evacuation/recharging ...especially since I don't own a vacuum pump.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Answer
Hi Jim,

If you have the equipment/know-how to evacuate/refill the system with the proper amount of R134A, then grab a wrench but in my opinion if you are unfamiliar with A/C systems, allow someone who does to fix it.

I would shop for a USED condenser (call the number below and ask for Rev) and then take the car to a shop OTHER than the dealership with the part and get an estimate for its installation. The dealership, after you purchase your car, is only there to rob you as they have no more knowledge than their local, non-dealership competition regardless of what they tell you.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
