Auto Parts: 92 cavalier, sway bar links, burnout comp

Question
QUESTION: I have a 92 cavalier with a nasty vibration in the front end when under torque and disapearing after certain speed.I cabt figure it out...cv joints are good and so is the clutch.Any info you can give me will be greatly appreciated thanks

ANSWER: Hi Kevin,

How are the ball joints and sway-bar links? What about if you pull out in second gear instead of first?

Send a follow-up and I'll try and help you more.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.

QUESTION: The ball joints and swaybar links are good also and second gear doesn't change a thing. What happened was I was being dumb and competing in burnout comp. and got 4th gear rubber and since then I have had this problem at first I thought it was the clutch but looking at it it turns out it is fine and the wheel weights are still there so I am wondering if there are harmonic balancer weights and if 1 of them came off.

Answer
Hi Kevin,

Well, if the weight of the balancer is off, you'd have a serious vibration all the time.

4th gear rubber, eh. With that additional knowledge, I would hazard a guess that maybe you bent the selector shaft inside of the trans. With it being slightly bent, it will cause a vibration especially in lower gear ranges because that's when the selector shaft spins faster.

Unlike the input an output shafts that spin at engine or vehicle speeds, the selector shaft spins fastest in first/reverse and as the gears are selected in the higher range, the input/output shafts start to spin faster than the selector which would cause more of a vibration at lower speeds or lower gear selections than at higher speeds.

Also possible the clutch plate spit out a spring or two causing it to go out-of-balance or maybe a finger or two were broken off of the pressure plate.

Lemme know how things work out.
