Auto Parts: Where do you find the engine Identification Number, ford mercury, pep boys

Question
Where do you find the engine Identification Number on a ford/mercury 3.0 liter engine. The engine I want to replace is a 1994 3.0 liter and I need to find the year of the engine I'm putting in place of it.

The block & accessories are the same. The exhaust manifolds are setup different. My original has a crossover y-pipe over top of the transmission but the other one has both sides open to the exhaust system.

Where do I find the engine ID numbers & how do I interpret them when I do find them to determine the year?

I appreciate your help and thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi Winston,

There is a tag mounted to the firewall with your 'engine family' information stamped onto it.

If you tell me exactly what you are trying to replace, I can give you the interchange and you won't have to concern yourself with codes.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
