Auto Parts: Turbocharger, pep boys, repair vehicles

Question
Hi,

I was woundering if you could help me know some information

1-Can a turbocharger be installed on a 1.0L engine. (VW POLO 2001)?

2- If yes is there a speacial size or any size would go?

3-Do you know a simple drawing showing how turbochargers are connected to the intercoolers and the engine?

Thank you very much.
hope you can help..........

Answer
Hi Sherif,

I don't deal at all with aftermarket or upgrade items but I can help by answering your questions.

A turbocharger can be installed on ANY engine that has less than a 9.5:1 compression ratio. Above that a secondary wastegate would have to be installed.

A special size? Not really. Turbos use a wastegate to release excess pressure so the unit will not cause damage to the engine.

A simple drawing, no. The path air would travel would be:
air intake-
air cleaner-
intercooler-
turbo-
intake manifold

Hope this helps.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
