Auto Parts: Check Light in 2000 Mercedes Benz ML320, mercedes benz ml320, pep boys

Question
I'm about paying for a 2000 Mercedes Benz. After I gave the seller a small deposit, he let me know that the "Check Engine" light has been coming on. What's the problem? Is it serious, and what is the estimate for fixing this? A friend of mine referred me to your site.

Answer
Hi Livy,

A SES light can mean any number of issues. I'd need to know which code it is giving you in order to determine seriousness of the problem.

If you want my opinion, find out what is wrong BEFORE purchasing. If the seller gives you a hard time about a non-refundable deposit, you can fall back on the lemon-law in your state which dictates everyone who sells a car must conform to the 'full disclosure' statute. If the seller didn't inform you PRIOR to the deposit of the SES light illumination, they did not fully disclose the vehicle and have breached the contract with you whether verbal or not so since they broke the agreement, they have no right to keep your deposit.

Know the law, know your rights.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
