Auto Parts: Air Filter, bosch platinum, platinum plugs

Question
My sister's birthday is coming up soon, and I want to get her an new air filter for her 2004 Saturn Ion 3.

I was raised around K&N so my first thought was, "No questions here. K&N."

But I realized that was simply based on everyone around me choosing K&N

Recommendations for an air filter brand to select would be appreciated!

The car is completely stock, and MPG is more important than power for her.

Thanks!

Answer
Hi Andrew,

That certainly is a strange birthday gift, but who am I to knock it.

With K&N you'll probably get the best product for the money you wish to spend. There are other companies that make filter kits but K&N is still the best bang-for-you-buck. Include a set of Bosch Platinum pugs (NOT the plus2 or plus4 variety, just the plain-ol' single electrode Bosch Platinum plugs will be fine) and you'll surely add 8-15% to your fuel efficiency numbers and make yer sis even happier.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
