Auto Parts: Transmission replacement, transmission bearings, pep boys

Question
I own a 2001 Honda S2000.  I recently had to replace all the bearings in the transmission.  I just found out that since the repairs, I've had no oil in the car- it holds 5 quarts and I put 4 in it.  Is the oil changed or drained in order to replace the transmission/bearings?  The car has not been leaking oil, and I had the oil changed just prior to having to put the new transmission in it, so I know it had oil in it when I took it in for repairs.  I'm concerned now that a valve may be burned out or the life of the motor has just been cut in half.......please advise!  thanks!

Answer
Hi Tamara,

Sorry for the delayed response but my computer has been down for the last few days.

Replace the berings in the transmission? That is a new one for me and I am a certified transmission tech. The only time you'd replace bearings in a MANUAL transmission is when it was being rebuilt/remanufactured.

I also don't know what the correlation is to the oil in your engine and the fluid in your transmission. The two fluids don't mix. The engine oil should not have to be removed in order to replace or repair ANY part of the transmission.

I would ask the shop that did the repairs, first for your old parts back so you can assure yourself that they actually performed the task assigned to them and I'd inquire why they drained the engine oil, or at least part of it, and then didn't top it back off before returning it to you. I mean, mistakes DO happen from time to time and it's always possible that the mechanic working on your vehicle inadvertently pulled the engine drain plug for a second until he noticed it was not trans fluid and put the plug back in forgetting to refill it to the proper level. I'm not going to make excuses for YOUR mechanic, that's his job and yours to call him on it.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
