Auto Parts: Ford Ranger Guage Cluster, mazda navajo, bronco ii

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1989 Ford Ranger XLT. It has the 2.3 4 cylinder with a Mitsubishi 5-Speed transmission with 5th gear as overdrive. It is an extended cab and never had air conditioning.I don't know if that matters but anyway. It has a tachometer that has quit working. I also have a wrecked 1992 Ford Ranger XLT. It is also a 2.3 4 cylinder but has a Mazda 5-Speed transmission with 5th gear as overdrive. It is a standard cab and does have air conditioning. The 1992 doesn't have a tachometer. I would like to put the guage cluster from the 92 in the 89. My question is, Would I have to rearrange the wires behind the cluster, or will it plug in without moving the wires?

ANSWER: Hi Nick,

Tough question to answer here.

The interchange for your cluster is non-existent. What I mean by that is Ford used many different styles of clusters in the ranger style vehicles depending on option packages and the only thing that was consistent is the speedometer head. So if that is what you want to change, the one from your '92 WILL fit and function but the cluster, probably not as a complete assembly although I wouldn't count it out without actually attempting the swap. Below is the complete interchange for your '89.:

2571366
BRONCO II 89-90 (head only), MPH
EXPLODER 91-92 (head only), MPH
MAZDA NAVAJO 91-92 (head only, MPH)
RANGER 89-92 (head only), MPH

CAUTION: This is speedometer head only; consider circuit board and other options before interchanging.
85 MPH.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.

QUESTION: Well Knucklebuster... I thank you for the quick answer but i still have a question on the same subject. The tachometer in the 89 quit working when I unplugged the cluster to put new lights in it what could be the reason it has quit working?

Answer
Hi Nick,

Ford uses those plastic IC boards so the first thing I'd check is that all of the contacts are actually touching. Make sure all the terminals are clean and tight.
