Auto Parts: motor compatibility, chevy caprice, ss impala

Question
QUESTION: would a 1996 ss impala motor fit in to a 1984 chevy caprice

ANSWER: Hi Robert,

Fit in? Of course. But you'll need to do a ton of modifications to get that fuel injected engine to run in place of the carburetted edition that came with your '84.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.

QUESTION: ok now I was wondering instead of the 96ss if an 1989 chevy caprice box 305 engine would bolt up to my 84 box caprice but my motor is an 3.8 liter v6 would I have to change all of my wire harness to the same as the v8 harness or would it just plug up

Answer
Hi Robert,

You could start with the wire harness, then move on to the trans, because the 3.8 bell is different than the 5.0, then you have to move the motor mount location on the frame. The mount pads are riveted to the engine cradle, the fuel pump will have to be upgraded from the 18PSI edition currently in place to a more beefier 44PSI edition that is needed for the 5.0 inj. system, the ECM, PCM and most likely, the BCM will need to be replaced with V8 editions along with the entire exhaust system from the manifolds all the way back including the cats. I'm sure there are more items that will require replacement/fabrication but I can't think of them right now.
