Auto Parts: 2001 Ford Taurus Air Vents Broken, ford taurus, pep boys

Question
The middle directional air vents on my 01 Taurus do not turn.  One is stuck and the other is broken.  It's a used car I bought. Everything else works.  How difficult is it to replace them, where is the best place to purchase the parts, and how long should it take repair for an average handyman?

Thanks.

Dave

Answer
Hi Dave,

Average replacement time should be like a minute. It's a small piece of plastic held in with two tiny clips. pop-in, pop-out. Where to get them is the harder question. Salvage yards near you will have the cars, but chances are they won't pull parts like that for you so you'll have to ask if you can go looking through their yard. Most places will have no problem with that and you'll end up leaving with the vents and maybe $10 or $20 lighter in the wallet.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
