I'd be looking for something mid-90's (96 or newer) to present Toyota, Honda, Chevy, Buick. Search for a 4-cylinder engine if available and preference to place of purchase is beyond my scope. Try looking on eBay Motors, Craig's list, your local newspaper and free-ads that you'd find on most supermarkets 'bulletin-board' walls. As far as a trade, unless you plan to purchase at a dealership, which I would steer you away from, you don't have any trade-in value in your current ride. After you purchase the new one, put a for sale sign on the old one or drive it across the scales. Locally, we are recieving $0.12 per pound of scrap steel which is phenomenal. an average car that weighs 3500 pounds driven across the scale is getting over $400.00! Pull some trim pieces off and list them on eBay and you may make enough from the sale of your old car to offset a good portion of the cost of the new one.
Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).
