Auto Parts: V70 XC replacement FOB/Keys, controller systems, sequential code

Question
I just bought a 2001 XC and the dealer only had a single master key - no remote.  Now I want to have some keys cut and would like to obtain the working remotes.  Given prices for keys/fob's (150 per key including programming, and 129 per remote), is it possible to have a non-chipped key cut and will that work if the working chipped master key is in the car and in proximity to the ignition switch?

Also, I've seen aftermarket remote door lock controller systems for sale for $50-$100.  This would give me three controllers for less than the price of one factory replacement, but I'd have to wire it in.  Would the installation of a third party remote entry system cause problems with the car in some way?

I understand why the manufacturers are using chipped keys and programming remotes, but the prices being charged for replacements should be illegal...

Thanks

Hi Bill in Louisville,

Fred from Pa here. I agree, it is literally robbery when a tiny piece of plastic with a button or two can fetch hundreds of dollars.

Unfortunately, the code for the transponder is ONLY known and can ONLY be read by the dealership scan tool. Volvo is very strict with that stuff but luckily our leaders are trying to change the information-sharing process between manufacturers which should lower prices for stuff like that by putting the information in the hands of aftermarketers. I think they said they were gonna get on that as soon as they took care of some old business like finding Bin Laden and boosting the economy so you know how soon...

If you are REAL nice and chummy with one of the techs at the dealership, you MAY get them to tell you how to put the BCM in diagnostic mode (sequential code) which will allow you to program ANY fob to work with the locks on your car. Yes, it is possible but they won't tell you that! Seriously. Unless you actually know someone there or know someone who knows someone there, you will be told it is impossible.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
