Auto Parts: elec door locks, pep boys, power locks

Question
QUESTION: 91 GMC S-10 Jimmy Blazer..The doors will unlock, but not lock using the switch. Has new switch on drivers door. (same applies to passenger door)
Also is the lock plunger and elec window motor all one unit inside the door?

ANSWER: Hi Bill,

Since power locks are used so infrequently on older vehicles, the motor for them usually gets frozen and stops working. Yours decided they don't want to lock anymore. The motor is usually mounted in the lower, rear of the door right under the lock mechanism itself. The window motor/regulator are separate units and have nothing in common with the door lock other than they utilize the same ground strap.

I've rarely heard of anyone replacing them but I imagine if it is that important, they should be commercially available at almost any used parts facility local to you or give us a call and we'll test some and let ya know.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.

QUESTION: Usually I'm good at mechanics but simply cannot find the elec window motor! ;( Bill

Answer
Hi Bill,

Hmmm. I've pretty much only ever seen those motors in the bottom-corner of the door usually a few inches below the latch mechanism itself. It should be about half the size of a cordless phone, usually black, with a crooked rod on top that goes to the latch mechanism. It's in there if you have power locks, it may just be in a different location depending on what other options your vehicle possesses.
