Auto Parts: catalytic converters, google search, pep boys

Question
Do you have an actual source to give for sale of a used catalytic converter. I have a 83 camaro I am junking and the junkman in my area is saying he only pays for steel weight at 125 a ton. Yet I keep hearing that the cat converter is worth real money because of the platinum in them. I did a google search and got a whole bunch of doubletalkers. Do YOU have any specific person you deal with.

Thank you for your time

Answer
Hi Chuck,

Unless you have at least 4 dozen converters to sell, no refinery or refinery agents will talk with you. That's just the way it is. Look in your local newspaper or auto-locator paper and call those listings saying they will haul your car away free or something to that effect and tell them you have a cat (as long as it is full) and you'd like to know how much they'll give you for it. Chances are you won't get more than about $20.00 for it because if I'm not mistaken, if it is an OEM cat, it'll be a beaded-cat. Meaning that instead of honeycombs surfaced with the platinum mixture, there are thousands of platinum-coated beads. Over the life of the cat, those beads find their way into the exhaust and out the tail pipe. Shake it, if it sounds like a big rattle, it's beaded. Sell it for what ya can get for it. If it is honeycomb and you can see the honeycombs inside it, you have a large domestic and they can run as much as $70.00 each. If it is aftermarket, throw it away as they aren't even worth anything to the refineries anymore.
$6.25 for automotive steel is a rip off, we're seeing prices in the $11.00 range here. I haven't seen $6/hundred in quite a few years actually.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
