Auto Parts: Exhaust Manifold/Catalytic Converter and Oxygen Sensor, pep boys, oxygen sensor

Question
Hi!
I just found out that i need to replace the items in the subject and was wondering is this something that can be done myself.  The problem I'm running into is what are the exact parts for the Catalytic Converter.  Have been told that it is connected to the Manifold and the Engine and it's  hard to replace.  Is this true?  I have price several on line but need to know is it the one that looks like a long pipe instead of a muffler.  Also, the oxygen sensor should it be replace when the converter is replaced?

Answer
Hi Tye,

Actually, you may be able to replace the cat-converter yourself but it is not recommended if your state requires emissions inspection as well as standard mechanical inspection as improper installation or installation of an aftermarket Cat-Con may cause your vehicle to fail.

Now, if someone told you that you have to replace all those items, what makes you so sure they are correct? The three pieces are next to each other but they all perform separate tasks. An O2 sensor doesn't need to be replaced unless it is bad. Period. No trouble code should lead you to replace the O2 sensor without testing it. The exhaust manifold should only need replacement if it is cracked/broken, which for a cast manifold is highly improbable. The Cat-Con should be replaced after the 100K mark but only when it is full and blocked. It sounds to me like someone is trying to solve a simple problem that they are clueless about at your expense. Get a second opinion or send me a follow-up with the actual symptoms of the problem.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
