Auto Parts: 1972 Buick GS oil dipstick, 4 quarts, buick gs

Question
I recently bought a 72 GS with a 350 4bbl and it doesn't have the original engine.  The number on the carburetor is for a 77 buick but I can't read the engine number.  The dipstick states that full is 4 quarts.  This doesn't seem correct to me.  I've always thought the 350 would take 5 quarts of oil.  Can you tell me if this is the correct dipstick for this engine and if not, where can I get one.  I've searched online and am having difficulty finding one.

Answer
Hi Vickie,

I have to agree with you that any V8 should take at least five quarts of oil at at a change.

Carb numbers at this point probably aren't going to be any use anymore as most of them Q-jet carbs work on any 4bbl equipped GM vehicle so it could have easily been replaced. Block cast numbers will be the only way you can determine which engine is installed in your GS. Cast number should be behind the left-bank cylinder head near the firewall and Series Code number should be stamped into a pad in front of the right-bank cylinder head usually under a bracket for the alternator or other accessories.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
