Auto Parts: 2000 tiburon, crank shaft, cam sprockets

Question
replacing a timing belt on a 2000 tiburon  can not find how to line it up so it will be in time   have tried   and its out of time  is there a way to set the belt

Answer
Hi Diane,

I think on that model (2.0L DOHC) you need to pre-set the angle of the crank before releasing the tensioner. What I mean is that once the tensioner is released, the engine is going to loose the angle you just set so in order for the outcome to be proper time, you need to pre-set the crank one-tooth retarded. Timing marks for both cam sprockets as well as the crank should be at TDC with the only exception being the pre-set crank angle AFTER you do the initial set of ALL TDC. I haven't worked on one of them in years so refer to a Motor manual for exact instructions. Also note that this assembly is listed in my notes as an interference design. That means that if the teeth of the cams and/or crank differ by more than 35 degrees of the cam or 18 degrees of the crank will result in bent valves, broken cam(s), bent connecting rod(s) or a bent crank shaft so timing is critical on that engine. I wish I were able to assist you more.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
